There’s something beautifully cosy about a home packed with textiles, family photos and vintage treasures, especially when it’s in a county as beautiful as Yorkshire. It probably comes as no surprise that the home of blogger Kathryn Sharman, of Kat Got The Cream, is top notch in the style stakes, especially when you consider her day job is to write about fashion, home and travel. However, the thing that really stands out about Kat’s home is the way she perfectly strikes that delicate balance between comfortable and cool.
“Our house is a 1930s stone-built semi in my home town of Harrogate in North Yorkshire,” says Kat. “I live here with my husband and our three young children. Over the years my interiors style has evolved from a vintage and shabby chic look to a slightly more modern, Scandi look – although we still really like to mix old with new and enjoy upcycling pieces.”
Kat recently gave her living room a makeover and created a handy homework corner in the room with this desk – a bureau desk from Ikea’s PS range. “We’d been looking for the right piece of furniture to fill a corner in our lounge,” explains Kat. “This one has a lovely design and is practical too. It provides a desk area for homework and surfing the net, plus extra storage for stationery that can be easily hidden away out of sight.”
Kat admits the lounge is probably her favourite space in the house, and says it really works as a room for all the family. “It finally feels complete in there now. Plus it’s always been our family room where we cosy up on our big sofa and watch films.”
“I use Pinterest for lots of interiors inspiration,” says Kat. “What did we ever do before it?! I used to read a lot of interiors magazines and chop pictures out and stick them into a scrapbook – so in a way Pinterest was just the next step. I still read Living etc and Elle Deco plus interiors blogs – I particularly love My Scandinavian Home.”
Kat’s bedroom is light and airy, with pale silk sheets and beautiful vintage touches alongside newer purchases. Filling the room is a stunning wooden bed which complements the retro sideboard perfectly, bringing an extra dose of charm and personality to the room.
“I really like the vintage mirror and sideboard in our bedroom,” says Kat. “They give the room more personality and it’s nice to have something with a bit of age and history to it too.”
