TREND WATCH: The Boucherouite Rug (the New Beni Ourain)

You know how the Berber rug (specifically, the Beni Ourain) was the rug of last season? Well if you’re looking for a new take on the Beni Ourain classic then this post is for you.

The Boucherouite is like the crazy cousin of the Beni Ourain. While the Beni Ourain is calm and classic with its natural palette and muted greys, the Boucherouite is hyperactive, excitable and anything but quiet. The colours are bold, but the pile remains as plush as ever. If you’re looking for a chic way to do Boho without compromising on colour, then the Boucherouite is your new best friend.

The Boucherouite rug’s nothing new. Originating in North Africa (just like the Beni Ourain) these rugs were originally handmade from bits of left over wool and rags. Back in 2013 they hit the lust list of the interiors A list and were featured on a few massive design blogs, but then all went a bit quiet. Until now.

This season it’s back in the spotlight as two major high street brands have released their own version of the Boucherouite in their AW16 collections: La Redoute and Habitat.

The photo above shows Habitat’s version, the HANS large multi-coloured block patterned rug, £600. Designed exclusively for the store by Martha Coates, this is a modern take on the traditional Moroccan rug and will create a real colour statement in any room it sits in.

La Redoute Boucherouite rug

Equally as bright, and equally as gorgeous, is the Anani 100% wool rug from La Redoute. This one comes in at £489 for the largest size – although you can get the smallest size from £265. Want? Yeah, same here.

If you’re more into supporting independent brands then you could do worse than head to Etsy. There’s a wealth of Boucherouite offerings over there, for a whole range of prices. We particularly love this one from Etsy seller MajorelDesign – at £288.18 plus shipping it’s a reasonable price for a beautifully made piece.

And if you still can’t get enough of the Boucherouite browsing, here are three more versions sold by independent online brands that you can buy directly from this very post via the Roost Shop.

You’re welcome. Happy Boucherouite bonding…

The first and second ones are absolutely amazing- the colours. It would completely not go in my living room, but I almost want to redecorate it again just for a rug. 😉
