TREND WATCH: The Berber Rug

If you’re looking for a statement rug that you can sink your feet into after a long day then look no further. The Berber rug is THE statement rug of 2016. And the best thing? The neutral design means it’ll prove to be a classic investment piece that won’t date any time soon.

The thing I love most about the Berber rug is the fact it can slot into almost any design scheme without taking over the space. Unlike it’s geometric, striped, brightly patterned rug friends, this is a stylish rug that won’t demand lots of attention. It’ll simply sit there, looking effortlessly cool, bringing a sense of luxury to a room without overshadowing everything else in there.

So named after the Berber tribes of Morocco, another name for the Berber rug is the Beni Ourain, because many of the Berber carpets are woven by the Beni Ourain tribe from the Rif Mountains near Taza in Morocco. Characteristically featuring a heavy white or cream pile, with geometric diamond designs, these rugs suit rooms with a contemporary look in a way that many other antique or classic Oriental style rugs don’t.

Beni Ourain Rugs

Enough of the history lesson. What you really want to know is where you can find the best Berber rugs at a price that won’t require you to remortage the house, right? The Beni Ourain rugs by Barefoot Gypsy, pictured above start from around £700, so they aren’t exactly cheap (although they are mighty beautiful). But if your budget won’t stretch that far you don’t need to give up on the idea of a Berber rug just yet. There are plenty out there to suit a more modest budget.

Our research showed up La Redoute as the best place for a variety of affordable Berber rug styles. For example, The AFAW Rug (pictured in the top image) is currently on sale – it’s available in 3 sizes and costs from £48.75. Or the Nyborg Shaggy Wool Rug (on the edit below) is also reduced – down to £122.50. The Louka Shaggy Wool Rug is another hit and you can pick one up at the moment for £111.75 in the sale.

Here are four of our other favourites around at the moment:

As someone who holds Morocco close to her heart (I volunteered there with children and adults from all walks of life a few years ago) and completely fell in love with Moroccan style, all the patterns and intricate designs, I absolutely love these types of rugs and hope to get my hands on one sometime soon. I’m not sure where it’ll go in my tiny 2 bed house, but I know I need one!
